Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder in Newport Beach, CA

Panic Attacks and Panic DisorderPanic attacks are extreme forms of Anxiety and have distinct symptoms:

  • Feeling unable to breathe or get enough breath
  • Tingling in Extremities or Top of Head
  • Nausea
  • Tightness in Chest
  • Sweating or Chills
  • Shaking or Trembling
  • Foreboding thoughts or fear of dying

People who suffer panic attacks learn to fear the occurrence of a panic attack and develop unhealthy strategies in an attempt to avoid them. These strategies can include refusal to go to or fear of certain places, not wanting to be in crowds, not wanting to be enclosed in elevators or airplanes, sometimes not wanting to leave home. These extreme behaviors actually exacerbate the disorder and keeps the person prisoner.

As with Anxiety, there are a number of effective Mindfulness Based and Cognitive Behavioral tools at our disposal to greatly reduce panic attacks in severity and frequency. Somatic therapies help with early identifcation and reduction of symptoms.
