Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder

Panic Attacks and Panic DisorderPanic attacks are extreme forms of Anxiety and have distinct symptoms:

  • Hyperventilation
  • Tingling in Extremities or Top of Head
  • Nausea
  • Tightness in Chest
  • Sweating or Chills
  • Shaking or Trembling
  • Foreboding thoughts or fear of dying

Generally speaking, most people find that these symptoms abate after around 20 to 30 minutes, peaking at around 10 minutes. They can be shorter or longer. People who suffer panic attacks learn to fear the occurrence of a panic attack and develop unhealthy strategies in an attempt to avoid them. These strategies can include refusal to go to or fear of certain places, not wanting to be in crowds, not wanting to be enclosed, sometimes not wanting to leave home. The extreme need for control exacerbates the disorder and keeps the person prisoner.
